THE BETJEMAN SOCIETY aims to promote the study and appreciation of the work and life of Sir John Betjeman by bringing together all those who admire his writings and share his enthusiasms.

There is an annual programme which includes poetry readings, lectures, discussions, visits to places associated with Betjeman, walks, picnics and social events.

A regular Newsletter is published which gives information about the Society. Our annual journal, The Betjemanian, contains articles, letters, reviews and photographs. It is a publication of permanent interest, and copies of most back issues are available.

Meetings are held in London and other centres. There is also a growing number of local branches, and their details are listed below.

The Branch continues to hold its meetings on the first Saturday of the month (no meeting in August). We welcome any members who would like to join us. Coffee at 10.15a.m., start at 10.30a.m., finish at 12.15p.m.

Sherborne
The Sherborne Branch meets in "Spring House" studio to read and talk about John Betjeman. Recitals are given throughoutthe Southern counties, reading the Poet Laureate's verse and prose interspersed with music. We raise money for the Parkinson's Disease Society, Cancer Care, and various churches.

The Shires
The Shires Branch exists to bring together members of our Society resident in the counties of Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Northampton, and Rutland. We have strong links with the Lincolnshire Branch, and several members outside our geographical territory attend Shires Branch meetings.

Main Society events in 2010

Tuesday 9 March, 6 for 6.30pm in Room G.37 at The Senate House, London University.  “Lend Me Your Ears”  Members’ choice of readings.

Saturday 8 May at 2.00pm. Visit to the Church of St Bartholomew the Great and then Charterhouse in the City of London.

Thursday 20 May at 6 for 6.30pm in Room  XXX at The Senate House, London University – The Last Laugh – Edward Mirzoeff introduces his 2001 Betjeman film. This is the event that was cancelled from 21 January.

Saturday 12 June at 12 noon.  Annual General Meeting at the Church of St Magnus the Martyr, City of London. Lunch available at 1.00pm after which Andrew Davis will lead a tour of the area.

Thursday 15 July at 6 for 6.30pm at The German Gymnasium, 26 Pancras Road. “The Re-birth of St. Pancras Station” by Andrew Lansley CBE – Architect.

Thursday 26 August at 6 for 6.30pm at St. John’s, Waterloo. Betjeman Birthday Party – Dominic Harrod remembers ....

Saturday 28 August at 4.00pm  at St Pancras Station. An informal poetry reading to celebrate John Betjeman’s birthday (full details to be confirmed)

Thursday 30 September at 6 for 6.30pm at The Gallery, Cowcross Street (venue to be confirmed) - “Scenes from Literary Life”  The Betjeman Lecture given by Jeremy Lewis.
